They are easy to create, manipulate, and measure using math and geometry, and their properties, such as perimeter, area, and diagonal, are well-understood and widely applicable. Rectangles are a fundamental geometric shape that has many practical and aesthetic applications in art, architecture, and everyday life. In art, rectangles can be used to create visual contrast, balance, and symmetry, as well as to convey ideas such as minimalism, modernism, and abstraction. For example, in Western architecture, rectangles are often used to convey a sense of stability, order, and rationality, while in Eastern cultures, rectangles may be associated with balance, harmony, and symmetry. In terms of cultural symbolism, rectangles have a wide range of meanings and associations depending on the context and culture. This is partly due to the complex interplay between biology and physics, where environmental factors such as gravity, pressure, and fluid dynamics can influence the shape of living structures. While some organisms such as ants and bees build rectangular structures, such as bee combs, most living things tend to produce shapes that are more irregular and asymmetrical. Interestingly, rectangles are not evenly distributed in nature. The human mind also has a natural tendency to favor rectangular shapes, which are easier to process and remember compared to irregular shapes.
